Top-Down Analysis

Top-down analysis means beginning on a higher timeframe (HTF) to establish bias, then moving to your trading timeframe for setup, and optionally to a lower timeframe for precise entry. The HTF tells you what to look for; the lower timeframes tell you when and where.

A practical stack for swing traders: weekly bias, daily setup, 4-hour entry. Day traders might use daily bias, 1-hour setup, 15-minute entry. Scalpers compress further but should still anchor to at least one HTF level or session structure.

On the HTF, answer three questions: Is structure trending or ranging? Where are the nearest major support and resistance zones? Is price approaching a decision point (HTF level, swing, or session extreme)?

Drop to your trading timeframe only after HTF answers are clear. Look for setups that agree — for example, bullish daily structure pulling back to daily support aligns with a 1-hour bullish rejection candle.

Top-down prevents counter-trend gambling. A beautiful 5-minute long means little if daily structure is bearish and price is under major resistance. Alignment does not guarantee success, but misalignment guarantees harder odds.
