Volume is the number of units traded in a period. It answers: how many participants agreed on that price move? A rally on rising volume suggests broad participation and conviction. A rally on falling volume suggests fewer buyers pushing price — the move may be fragile.
Volume is not available on all forex charts (spot FX is decentralized), but futures, stocks, and crypto spot markets provide it. If your instrument lacks reliable volume, use tick volume or order book depth as a proxy, or lean more on price structure and session context.
Basic manual rules: breakouts on expanding volume are more trustworthy than breakouts on thin volume. Pullbacks on declining volume often indicate trend health. Climactic volume spikes at extremes can mark exhaustion as late participants pile in.
Compare volume relatively, not absolutely. Today's volume matters versus the 20-day average, not versus a different stock. Use your platform's volume histogram and note whether current bars are above or below recent norms.
Volume confirms; it does not replace price. A high-volume failed breakout still failed — price closed back in the range. Always let candle closes and structure lead; volume is a second opinion.
